Winmate R10IB3S-GST2 10.4 inch GS Series Panel PC
Robust, robust and reliable fanless work tool with a modern look and capacitive multi-touch
(by Conrad H. Blickenstorfer, September 2021)
In this article we take a look at another of WinmateThe very wide range of Panel PCs. Panel PCs are workhorses – many are mounted on panels in factories, serving as a human touch interface to programs and machines. Others can be found in vehicles, on shelves, in workshops, on loading docks, on ships, and many other places where a handy small panel computer is needed. Panel PCs come in many sizes and configurations, and there’s a good chance Winmate has the right one.
Since the company makes so many different models, the product names read a lot like codes, and you may need some help figuring out what all those numbers and letters mean. This is certainly the case for the Winmate R10IB3S-GST2, which is part of the Winmate GC-Series range of heavy-duty fanless industrial panel PCs that come with capacitive multi-touch screens ranging from 7 to 24 inches.
The R10IB3S-GST2 integrates towards the lower end of this spectrum. Its compact 10 x 7.8 inch footprint means this panel will fit almost anywhere. Its 10.4-inch display is both large enough to run Windows 10 apps, but also small enough to serve as a compact and dedicated human-machine interface panel.
As is often the case with Panel PCs, there are no front buttons at all, not even for the power supply (the power supply and reset are on the back). There is no need for that. All that most R10IB3S-GST2 customers expect from this panel computer is that it will reliably and consistently run their custom coded applications. There’s the now almost ubiquitous capacitive multi-touch screen. If a keyboard is needed for a particular application or deployment, this can be done by software or through a compact USB or wireless physical keyboard.
All I / O is on the back of the panel, facing down. And because it’s a strong, rugged, and well-sealed system designed to be as reliable and trouble-free as possible, there are only three ports, and all three use special waterproof screw-on M12 circular connectors with a diameter of 12 mm. blocking wire. They can handle multiple features in a single connector, thus minimizing the number of ports required, they protect against accidental disconnections, and they are designed to handle washdowns and corrosive environments. The three M12 ports on our test unit provided power, one RS232 serial port and another providing both a USB port and an RJ45 LAN socket. The necessary cables are supplied with the device.
Customers will rarely need to open one of their R10IB3S-GST2 panels, but at RuggedPCReview we always show what’s inside. Unscrew 18 small Philips screws and the back pops off to reveal the kind of logically organized, easy to work with, and properly secure interior we’ve come to expect from Winmate products.
The R10IB3S-GST2 is almost entirely made of metal and glass. The glass is mounted on the heavy front part of the case which appears to be made of cast aluminum. Glass covers the entire front of the panel, allowing for smooth and easy multi-touch operation. A thick metal plate attaches to it and serves as a mounting surface for all electronic devices. There’s the integrated-style PC motherboard, the usual dollops of silicone glue to hold the connectors in place even through shock and vibration, and a variety of switches and expansion slots common to PC-style boards.
For processing, the Winmate R10IB3S-GST2 uses a quad-core Intel “Bay Trail” Celeron N2930 processor. This is a reliable 64-bit 22nm chip that has been used in hardware for many in-vehicle applications for a number of years. It has a base frequency of 1.83 GHz and is capable of operating at burst frequencies up to 2.16 GHz to handle heavier loads quickly. There is up to 8 GB of DDR3L RAM. Mass storage is via a 64 GB mSATA M.2 SSD module (up to 512 GB optional).
From the front, the Winmate R10IB3S-GST2 looks like any modern tablet with its completely flat, flush glass front that is easy to clean and sanitize, an increasingly important aspect in today’s world.
The housing is designed to be mounted in different ways. There are standard 75x75mm and 100x100mm VESA screw holes for wall or arm mounting. There are also panel mounting screw holes, and there’s even a glass wall mounting kit.
The table below shows how the R10IB3S-GST2 relates to a few other small industrial Winmate devices that we recently had in our lab.

When it comes to robustness and durability, Panel PCs have different requirements than mobile systems that are transported. The usual drop specification doesn’t matter here as these units are fixed mounts. However, they must be able to withstand shocks and vibrations, as well as have a high degree of resistance to external damage. Protection against seepage is important, both for particles and liquids. The panel passed these tests.
The R10IB3S-GST2’s operating temperature range of 5 to 131 degrees Fahrenheit makes it suitable for both indoor and outdoor deployments. The entire panel carries an IP65 rating where the first “6” indicates that the unit is completely dust tight and the “5” indicates that the unit can even handle low pressure water jets. Combined with the M12 connectors, this means the panel can be watered as needed.
The quality and brightness of the display are as important in Panel PCs as in any other computer. The 10.4 inch display of the R10IB3S-GST2 offers a resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels, which is quite adequate for the custom touch applications for which these units are mainly used. Likewise, the screen’s 123 ppi (pixels per inch) are easily sharp enough for its intended use.
Since the R10IB3S-GST2 units are designed for indoor and outdoor use, they can be ordered with panel brightness of 350 or 1000 nits. In our lab luminance tests, the R10IB3S-GST2 hit 440 nits, well above your average modern desktop laptop. However, for daylight, open vehicles and marine use, we recommend the 1000 nits option.
