West League preview: Helston Athletic, Mousehole in action

Helston Athletic have seemingly got their season back on track after a dip in form over the winter spell which saw the Blues lose four league games in a row.

However, last week was good for Athletic. Following the additions of Mike Searle and Matt Wright up front, Athletic have won their last two games. Most recently they beat Brislington with a 1-0 away win.

Although Helston has made three acquisitions since Christmas, it was one of his first signings who has grabbed headlines over the past two weeks as Orlando Anker twice came off the bench to score the game-winning goal for the Blues.

The former Newquay man will be aiming for a starting spot as manager Steve Massey has admitted he could change his squad for visiting last-placed Bridport, whom Helston beat 7-1 on the opening day of the season . The full report for this game can be found here.

Bridport have won just one league game since. Helston’s victory could see them climb to fifth, although that depends on results elsewhere.

Mousehole will be hoping to continue their fine form at the weekend when they travel to Clevedon Town.

Mousehole are third in the league, on 47 points with second-placed Exmouth Town despite two fewer games. In fact, the Trungle Park side have four games in hand over leaders Tavistock, a maximum return of 12 points from those games will see Mousehole take the league lead.

One of two other Cornish sides in the league, Saltash are at home to Cadbury Heath. Saltash is only one place and two points below Helston. Saltash beat Bridport 9-0 in their last outing. Although Bridport had to field an outfield player between the sticks due to an injury to their keeper mid-game.

Millbrook are in action at Keynsham, they are tenth in the table and despite falling out of the Phillips Cup against Helston earlier this month, they found their way back to winning ways in their last game with a 3-2 win at away against Ashton & Backwell United.

Elsewhere at the top of the table, leaders Tavistock are back in action and host Brislington at Langsofrd Park, second place Exmouth take on Shepton Mallet and fourth place Ilfracombe welcome Street.
