University of Nottingham beat Penzance in hard-fought Tier 4 final

Sam Mayhew’s first-half strike secured the Tier 4 Men’s Championship trophy for 5th-placed University of Nottingham, who overcame Penzance 1-0 in a hard-fought final.

The early morning start didn’t dampen the lively atmosphere around the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Center, with both teams well supported by roving vocal supporters.

The college team nearly gave their fans something to cheer for after 10 minutes, with captain Robbie Warburton narrowly firing the backhand.

Penzance fought hard to fend off a series of early attacks and created an excellent chance in the 25th minute when Brogan Donnelly was played on goal, only to shovel his effort in after trying to round the goalkeeper.

Mayhew fired a warning shot from a penalty corner in the 28the minute, a deflected effort going just wide, and it was not to be denied four minutes later as the deadlock was broken – the deflection this time going in his favor as his shot dripped terribly out of Will Collins’ reach.

The Cornish side went close to a leveler midway through the second half when a fine pass from Kieran Bowden freed Josh Drew, who saw his shot saved by Ben Lewis’ outstretched foot with the rebound just avoiding Donnelly.

William Hunt and Finn Edwards had chances to double Nottingham’s advantage and they had to dig deep late to secure the silverware, with Bowden and Josh Williams both having their efforts saved in the last minute.
