The winners of the Penzance Mayor Christmas Card Contest have been announced.

Cllr Jonathan How, Mayor of Penzance, chose seven winners, including one overall winner, from local school students in the parish who created Christmas card designs this year with the theme “Kindness at Christmas”.

After an invitation to all schools in Penzance, Cornwall, registrations were received from Gulval School, Heamoor Community Primary School, St Mary’s C of E School, St Mary’s Catholic Primary School , Mousehole Elementary School, Pensans CP School and Alverton Elementary School.

Out of 150 entries, Cllr How narrowed it down to seven and picked a winner from each of the seven schools that entered the contest.

The big winner, whose design was turned into Christmas cards for the mayor, is Ben Wood of Mousehole Elementary School.

Cllr How said, “We have had a really great response to the Christmas Card Contest this year. I realized that the task of choosing a winner would be very difficult when the dozens of entries were laid out in front of me. But it was wonderful to see how the children reacted to the theme “Kindness at Christmas”.

“Ben’s beautiful design was very poignant – reminding us of the enormous debt we owe the RNLI on this – the 40th anniversary of the Penlee lifeboat disaster.”

Ben’s winning design will be sent by the Mayor of Penzance across the Duchy and beyond, to Nevada City, California, to schools, community organizations, parish councilors and the military.

The winner from each school will receive a fully stocked art box and a personal letter from the mayor.

The winners of the 2021 Mayor’s Christmas Card Contest are:
Ben Wood of Mousehole Elementary School (Big Winner)
Esmae from Gulval School
Charlotte Tonkin of the Heamoor community primary
Joanna Stobbs from St Mary’s C of E School
Aria Griffiths of St Mary’s Catholic Primary
Ebony-Burley Daniel from Pensans CP School
Adam H from Alverton Elementary School

December 19, 2021 marks the 40th anniversary of the Penlee lifeboat disaster when the crew of the Solomon Browne lifeboat and Union Star coaster were tragically lost.
