Edited press release

McKayla Langmeier (USA) isn’t intimidated by the level of international competition in Traverse City. Out of 29 entries, she took victory with Bahira S in the $37,000 San Marcos Training CSI3* Speed Classic, clocking two seconds faster than any other clear effort.

Over the past year, McKayla and the 12-year-old Oldenburg mare (Balou Du Rouet x ) have gotten to know each other and climbed the ranks in FEI competition. Thursday’s sprint class was built for the occasion, providing a preview of the competition ahead at the 2022 Great Lakes Equestrian Festival (GLEF), presented by CaptiveOne Advisors. The track, laid out by Mexican Catsy Cruz, featured opportunities for tight inside turns, long lineups with options to sidestep strides, and several tricky fences that frequently fell as the terrain narrowed.

Twenty-third in the starting order, Langmeier, a pro rider from the Kelianda family farm in East Granby, CT, used her mare’s natural speed to her advantage. She didn’t take extreme risks, but her efficient pace and quickness through the air put her in first place, setting the Twydil Time to Beat at 61.28 seconds for the peloton to catch.

Second to last in the order, Irishman Simon McCarthy gave Langmeier a hard time but missed Rock Ridge Farms-owned Gotcha in a clear effort clocking 63.45 seconds. Livestream 2 and Lisa Carlsen (CAN) completed the top three in 64.78 seconds.

“We just got to that height from Florida,” Langmeier said of his experience with the mare owned by Rafferty Farm LLC. “She took me a while to get used to because she’s so bloody and has so much power. She’s really strong, so we had to take it easy and build the relationship.

Along with several other mounts in his string, Langmeier will be targeting Bahira S and Mimosa VD Rollebeek for the $37,000 Innovo CSI3* Welcome Stake on Friday and will be competing several up-and-coming mounts in national classes.

“I have to say that from the first year we came here, we stopped,” Langmeier commented on Flintfields Horse Park. “It’s such a beautiful place. They are doing an amazing job with the setup here. It’s so clean, the footing is great and there’s so much to do besides the horse show that makes it such a popular place.

Currently at the top of the CaptiveOne Advisors Leading Jumper Rider Bonus is Beat Mändli (SUI) after racking up bonus points from his victory on the final day of Traverse City Spring, presented by Turtle Creek Casino & Hotel. As he embarks on a European tour this summer, Margie Engle (USA) is sitting right behind him looking to reclaim the lead in GLEF.
