McDonald’s is arguably the most popular fast food chain in the world with thousands of branches across the UK.
Cornwall is no exception with 10 establishments displaying the famous golden arches, meaning you’re never too far from a Big Mac or Chicken Legend.
If you’ve ever wondered which is the best when it comes to cleanliness, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) makes its hygiene ratings public, which means it’s easy to find out how restaurants got their score.
Inspections are carried out by the local authority and the results are updated on the FSA website whenever there is a new inspection.
What do the notes mean:
There are six different ratings a place can receive, from 0 to 5.
- 5 – Hygiene standards are very good
- 4 – Hygiene standards are good
- 3 – Hygiene standards are generally satisfactory
- 2 – Some improvements are needed
- 1 – Major improvement is needed
- 0 – Urgent improvement is required

How is McDonald’s rated?
Inspectors look at a few different key things when evaluating a restaurant’s hygiene, including:
The degree of hygiene with which food is handled, for example how it is prepared, cooked, reheated, cooled and stored.
Structural condition of buildings – cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation and other facilities.
How the company manages what it does to ensure food is safe so the agent can be confident that standards will be maintained in the future.
