Gilbert and Sullivan classics will be on stage at Malvern

The Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company is due to return to Malvern next month.

After being absent from the Malvern stage for three years, the company will return to perform some Gilbert and Sullivan classics from September 8-10.

The company will perform The Pirates of Penzance, HMS Pinafore and Iolanthe.

For this 2022 season, they will also be joined by the famous Opera Della Luna for two performances from HMS Pinafore.

The Pirates of Penzance, one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s most iconic shows, will be directed by Sarah Helsby.

A performance spokesperson said: “Starring James Cleverton as the dashing Pirate King and Matthew Siveter as the Major General, The Pirates of Penzance sails to Malvern with a spectacle full of fun and frivolity. .

“What could go wrong with sentimental, sensory pirates who are actually peers of the realm, a completely idiotic major general and a clumsy bunch of hapless policemen?”

The Penzance Pirates will be played at 2.30pm and 7.30pm on Friday 9th September.

Iolanthe, directed by John Savournin, will be played at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 8.

A spokesperson for that show said: “Iolanthe is a hilarious satirical fairy tale.

“Life in the fairy realm has been quite miserable since Iolanthe was banished for marrying a mortal, forbidden by fairy law, but things begin to look up when the fairy queen forgives her.

“This enchanting production stars Matthew Kellett as Lord Chancellor and Meriel Cunningham as Iolanthe.

“WS Gilbert wrote his libretto for Iolanthe one hundred and forty years ago, ridiculing the hereditary peerage among many other things, and there are lines which could have been written yesterday.”

The third and final show presented is HMS Pinafore and the company is joined by Opera della Luna for these shows at 2.30pm and 7.30pm on Saturday 10th September.

A spokesperson for that performance said: “To cap off three fabulous days of Gilbert and Sullivan, Opera della Luna entertains with their very famous and much-loved production of HMS Pinafore.

“HMS Pinafore is one of the greatest hits of the G&S partnership, and in the hands of Opera della Luna it becomes a fast-paced, utterly delicious and hilarious recreation of the original hit.

“Gorgeous costumes and ingenious, imaginative staging make this a show not to be missed.”
