A former fishing net loft converted into a holiday home with stunning sea views has hit the market for £1.25million – with Cornish residents facing soaring house prices fueled by landlords second homes and Airbnb rentals.

Grade II listed Hope House sits just off the picturesque harbor in the sought after former fishing village of Mousehole on the south coast. It costs nearly five times the average UK property price of £278,000.

The house, which has been featured in Vogue, was once a netted loft in the 17th century, but is currently set up as a three-bedroom cottage with a separately accessible one-bedroom apartment.

Jayne Kirkham, Labor councilor for Falmouth Penwerris, said the fact that a relatively modest cottage was on sale for over a million showed the challenge local people were facing.

‘These types of houses are so out of reach for locals – the average salary in Cornwall is 20 per cent below the national average, but house prices are higher,’ she told MailOnline .

“What we are seeing more and more is that key workers and people who work in hospitality have to live miles and miles away from where they work. Anyone with a normal job can no longer live in places like Mousehole.

“Prices here have increased recently, as have private rents. It didn’t help during the pandemic when many people realized they could come to Cornwall and work there, as well as have a second home and earn money from vacation rentals.

“What we would really like in Cornwall is more devolved power to deal with these issues like they have in Wales.”

Estate agents Lillicrap Chilcott say Hope House is one of the best-positioned cottages in Mousehole, where houses overlooking the harbor are rarely on the market.

It has been rented out as two vacation homes through Unique Homestays since 2012 as Oystercatcher and Herringbone.

‘Perched above the harbor with stunning views, Hope House represents a very special opportunity for one lucky buyer.

‘Mousehole is very pretty and incredibly sought after with winding streets and fishermen’s houses all around the harbor and properties that face the harbor are rarely available for sale.

“It’s in the perfect location for Christmas lights, but just steps from a wonderful array of restaurants, shops, and delis.”
