Clovelly named one of UK’s most Christmas places

The small fishing village of Clovelly has been named one of the UK’s most Christmas spots.

The idyllic location on the North Devon coast has been voted the fifth best place in the country for a party holiday.

It was the only place in Devon to make the list in a survey conducted by the holiday rental company

Edinburgh was in first place, followed by Bath, Mousehole in Cornwall and York.

With its famous cobbled streets, friendly donkeys, pretty cottages and incredible views, Clovelly is renowned for its unique charms. The ancient village is perched on a 400 foot cliff and vehicles are not allowed.

In 2020, it was dubbed the UK’s most “Instagrammable” place, according to Google.

However, earlier this year disgruntled visitors took to social media to complain about the “cobblestone hellish landscape”, “lack of accessibility” and exorbitant fees – there’s an entrance fee of $ 8. £ 25 to enter the village, to help with its upkeep.

Despite a few complaints, the village remains popular with visitors and locals alike and is famous for its annual Christmas light lighting.

“It is a truly magical time for locals and visitors,” said Maha Rous, who is involved in the management of the village.

“If you are looking to immerse yourself in the Christmas spirit, Clovelly is a wonderful place.”

This year, the festivities take place on Sunday (November 28) from 3.30 p.m.

A local marching band will lead the crowds to the wharf, with Christmas carols and mulled wine.

It will be followed by the lighting ceremony at 5 p.m.

“This is a great opportunity to experience some of the great Christmas traditions,” added Maha.

“Remember to watch out for the lobster pot Christmas tree.”

There will also be a roast pork and a surprise visit from Santa Claus and the evening will end with a big fireworks display over the harbor.

But the Clovelly festivities don’t end there: a Boxing Day barbecue and a fancy dress party for New Years Eve are also planned.

The entrance fee for switching on the Christmas lights is £ 10 per car at the Visitor Center with all proceeds going to the RNLI.
