Mike Ryan’s Irish Homebred be your best will debut in the $150,000 PG Johnson Stakes, a 1 1/16 mile indoor turf test for juvenile fillies, on September 1 at Saratoga Racetrack.
Trained by Horacio De Paz, Be Your Best recorded the field’s best equibase speed figure of 79 in her first special weight score of 3 1/4 lengths, covering 1 1/16 miles on firm turf of Spa on July 31.
Patiently handled by returning runner Jose Ortiz, the Muhaarar bay settled into seventh in the first quarter mile before advancing to outside rivals on the final corner. Be Your Best rallied five wide down the lane, taking command in the final eighth of a mile to win in a final time of 1:43.97.
“She broke a step slowly. She’s usually a better door horse than that, but I think that’s just one of those things that happens with beginners,” De Paz said. “He tried to navigate a trip and stay away and give her the best experience. Obviously he had a horse under him and let her run, and she definitely did.”
Be Your Best was sent to the position at 8-1 odds, fifth pick in the field of 10, in which the debutante trained by Chad Brown Free look a $300,000 buy from Keeneland’s 1-year-old sale in September, became the 5-2 favorite.
“I was supporting her to run well,” De Paz said. “She had trained well, but obviously with the grass racing here, and having Chad Brown horses there and other connections, it can be a bit difficult. She was overlooked in her first race, It’s certain.”
Be Your Best came back twice on its first score, including a Thursday half-mile breeze in: 49.09 on the main Spa track.
“She’s been fine. She’s been very consistent since her run,” De Paz said. “She’s a pretty filly. She’s average height, but she’s very efficient in her movements. I have a few horses with Mike Ryan. He bred her, and I was just lucky that he decided to send her to me. She is definitely a talented filly.”
De Paz said he was looking forward to seeing how the filly progresses in the afternoon.
“She’s a nice filly and she’s doing very well,” said De Paz. “If she were to be able to run where she can tuck in, get off the bit and relax, she’s got a quick toe turn. As we run her, we’ll find out more about what her style will be like. “
Be Your Best will come out of post 6 under Ortiz.
