Traditionally, romantic comedies don’t make a lot of money at the box office, but that doesn’t stop Hollywood from churning them out year after year. In fact, one of the coolest things about rom-coms is that they’re able to subvert genres all the time. Sure, they’re always too much but they also have the ability to shock viewers.
2012 may not have been the best year for rom-coms, but it produced several interesting ones that continued to push the boundaries of the genre. From anthologies to a Wes Anderson coming-of-age rom-com, the genre was full of interesting mash-ups.
Exit Strategy – February 10
When it comes to romantic comedies of 2012, Exit strategy is one of the most underrated. This is largely due to the fact that it did not have a wide release in theaters. Still, the characters were fairly well-known since the film was originally a seven-part web series that debuted in 2007.
The film centers on James (Jameel Saleem), a young man who moves in with his new girlfriend after being kicked out of his house. James soon realizes he no longer has feelings for Kim (Kimelia Weathers) but his living situation complicates his plans for a breakup.
This Mean Wars – February 17
Reese Witherspoon may be known now for her more dramatic roles, but before that, she was a romantic comedy star. Unfortunately, his star power wasn’t enough to save It means wars to be panned by critics despite making a profit at the box office.
It means war follows two CIA agents (Chris Pine and Tom Hardy) who are best friends and partners. However, their relationship is tested when they both fall in love with Lauren (Witherspoon). Now the two must use their CIA skills to go head-to-head in hopes of winning her affection.
Think like a man – April 20
think like a man doesn’t sound like a romantic comedy title, but that’s what makes it so fun. The film, released in April 2012, is actually based on a 2009 book written by Steve Harvey. The film was so successful that it deserved a sequel.
The film centers on four friends who discover their loved ones are using Steve Harvey’s relationship advice book against them. An Anthology Film: Some of the stories include ‘Mommy’s Boy’ vs. ‘The Single Mom’ and ‘The Dreamer’ vs. ‘The Woman Who’s Her Own Man’.
The Five-Year Commitment – April 27
The five-year commitment was one of the most “highly publicized” romantic comedies released in 2012 in part because it was produced by Judd Apatow. The film was also co-written by Jason Segel who also starred in the film alongside Emily Blunt.
The romantic comedy begins when Tom (Segel) decides to propose Violet (Blunt) on their first anniversary. The proposal doesn’t go exactly to plan, which becomes a precursor to the couple’s lives as they plan their wedding. As their marriage continues to be postponed, their relationship begins to deteriorate.
What to expect when you’re pregnant – May 18
It is no coincidence that What to expect when you are pregnant shares a name with the best-selling pregnancy guide of the same name since the movie was based on the guide. Although the film featured an all-star cast including Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, and Chris Rock, the film received mixed reviews from critics.
Another romantic comedy by analogy, the film follows five couples as they navigate the highs and lows of pregnancy. Whether it’s a woman who runs a nursing store and dreams of being pregnant only to realize she hated it, or a young woman who miscarries, there is a pregnancy story that everyone can relate to.
Moonrise Kingdom – May 25
by Wes Anderson Moonrise Kingdom was one of the most anticipated romantic comedies/coming of age films of 2012. It was also the first time in over five years that Anderson returned to live-action movies instead of hitchhiking movies. -motion. A decision that has paid off since it is now his fourth highest-grossing film of all time.
The coming-of-age romantic comedy follows the life of an orphan boy who lives on the fictional island of New Penzance. The boy escapes from his scout camp and reunites with his pen pal and the two decide to run away together.

The apocalypse and romantic comedies don’t usually go together well, but that hasn’t stopped the creators from Looking for a friend for the end of the world to try. Perhaps the film was ahead of its time as it became one of the many box office bombs of the year.
The film, which starred Steve Carell and Kiera Knightley, centers on two strangers who decide to help each other find closure before a massive asteroid hits Earth and kills all living things.
Hope Springs – August 8
Meryl Streep is not a name synonymous with romantic comedies but in 2012 she lent her immense talent to romantic comedy Hope Springs. The film was a huge box office success and even earned a Golden Globe nomination in its awards season.
Hope springs followed Kay and Arnold, a long-married couple, who are at an impasse in their relationship. Kay thinks the two need to spice things up to keep their love strong, which leads to them attending a marriage retreat, which leads them to think much deeper than Kay thought.
Bachelorette – September 7
Not to be confused with one of the best reality shows of all time, Bachelorette was a 2012 romantic comedy released in September. The film, which shares no connection with the series, was actually adapted from a play written by Leslye Headland.
Directed by Kristen Dunst, Bachelorette centers on three bridesmaids who accidentally destroy their friend’s wedding dress. The three friends decided to replace the dress before the bride could find out, but ended up having a crazy party instead.
Save the Date – December 14
When it comes to the independent film circuit, romantic comedies aren’t usually popular, but Save this date managed to be the exception. In fact, it won a major award at the Newport Beach Film Festival and was even nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance.
Save this date focuses on two close sisters who are in different phases of their love life. One is planning her wedding while the other sister spends most of her time avoiding a man who could very well be her soul mate.
